Description Notes

Booklet, advertisement for didactic anatomical model of a horse, by Louis Auzoux, French, 1860.

Advertisement for anatomical model of a horse by Louis Auzoux, French, 1860. 14 pages. Rare booklet used by Auzoux to promote veterinary sciences; entitled: “INSUFFISANCE DES CHEVAUX FORTS ET LÉGERS DU CHEVAL DE GUERRE ET DE LUXE
POSSIBILITÉ DE L’OBTENIR EN CRÉANT DANS CHAQUE DÉPARTEMENT DE ÉCOLES D’ÉLEVEURS” (Insufficient quantities of strong and light horses for war and luxury use: Possibility to obtain and create in each department some schools of breeders). Over the first pages, Auzoux emphasises the lack of strong and light horses in France, the reliance on importing them from abroad and the negative impact this has on industry and economy. He outlines the history of improvement in this area, from Louis XII in 1639, and it’s failure. Subsequently outlines the numerous foals available in France, and declares that other resources are all available, apart from breeders. In emphasising the importance of schools for riding, studs/breeding, farming and vets created (by Auzoux? or France?) he also suggests the use of a clastic anatomical horse model would be profitable for each school.

Pamphlet is in a plastic wrapper - spine is torn in places, paper is discoloured and dirty (significantly so in places), with a stain from a drop of liquid on the front.

Condition: good/fair, complete.
