Description Notes

12-inch false-colour globe of Venus, by Sky & Telescope, U.S.A., c. 2014.

12-inch Venus globe, produced in collaboration with NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, created as a result of over a decade of radar imaging that culminated in the 1990-1994 Magellan mission. The Magellan spacecraft mapped about 98% of Venus at a resolution of about 100 metres. The effective resolution of this globe is about 5km. Gaps in this imaging are filled by images from the soviet Venera 15 and 16 spacecraft in the Northern quarter of the planet, as well as images from Arecibo Observatory in a region centred around 0o longitude and latitude. Contrast has been raised to emphasise small features. globe is to approximate scale of 1:40,000,000, where 1mm is 40km and 1 inch is 625 miles. Colours indicate elevation; gaps in the elevation data were filled with altimetry from the Venera 15/16 and the U.S. pioneer Venus missions.

Comes with a clear pedestal and a 16-page information booklet with essay by R. Stephen Saunders on recent developments in understanding of Venus.

Bought as new, excellent condition. Complete.
