Description Notes

Animated card models of working systems/engines, for engineering students, by Thomas & T. Gilbert Jones, English, c. 1900.

Seven of eight flat models of engine slide valves with box. Model no. six is the missing model. Box contains two series of 4 models.

Models are comprised of a small lithograph with sliding card features, affixed using brass pins and holes in the card to slide the valve across. All cards are roughly A6 size. All models except no. 2 use red and blue to illustrate the model; no 2 is in black and white. Cost 2 and 6.

6613.1 - Box
6613.2 - No. 1 depicts a short D. slide valve with one sliding feature for a locomotive engine
6613.3 - No. 2 depicts a single action piston valve for a steam hammer and has one sliding feature. No. 2 is the only model in black and white.
6613.4 -No. 3 depicts Meyers variable cut off valves and has two sliding features
6613.5 - No. 4 depicts a long D. sliding valve and a double short D. valve, each has a sliding feature. These valves were used to shorted steam passages.
6613.6 - No. 5 depicts a short D. slide valve that is balanced (a cylinder fitted with moveable piston), and has one sliding feature.
6613.7 - No. 7. depicts a double ported slide valve fitted with a relief ring.
6613.8 - No. 8 depicts a simple trick valve and a diagram of piston and crank positions.

Box is in quite bad condition, worn on all edges and torn on some. Some rips and black stains to the label on the front and the rear rendering some of the text illegible. The cards are in much better condition. They have yellowed and discoloured, and have some dirty marks and fingerprints, but are still entirely legible and functioning.

Condition: fair, incomplete.
