Description Notes
‘Things of Science’ educational kit (Space age minerals, #266), by Science Service and repackaged by Advisory Centre for Education, English, c. 1962.
Space age minerals, unit no. 266, issued December 1962.
Box contains minerals: Kernite (in a sealed plastic bag), Beryl, Spodumene, Wolframite, Pollucite, Coffinite, instruction leaflet, a page from ACE translating American English terms from the booklet and tissue to pad the box. The instruction booklet explains the significance of minerals that have chemical elements developed in response to space age needs. In addition it has many experiments the owner can try out with the contents of the box. Produced by Ruby Yoshioka.
It is worth noting that when purchased from eBay the letter translating terms was not inside the box but with another letter (which is spare, see 6616.13(?)). This letter has been put into this box as opposed to being accessioned separately as it is folded in the same way as the others that are inside boxes (6616.13 is not), the box was missing its letter, and the eBay seller was seemingly not the original owner of the kits and may not have realised these belonged together.
Box and contents made by Science Service, and box has since had the translation page included and been relabelled by ACE.
This box was unopened and sealed when it arrived at the museum, has subsequently been opened by staff.
Condition: good, complete. Seems as if the Kernite has deteriorated as booklet indicates it should have arrived in long crystals - now it is a white powder - this is perhaps just due to movement.

Description
These c.1960s Things of Science kits were purchased in bulk by the Advisory Centre for Education here in Cambridge from U.S.A. company Science Service, whose science kits aimed to popularise science and spread scientific knowledge. These kits have has new labels applied and include a page that offered translations for American words that British children may have been unfamiliar with. Over time, the Advisory Centre of Education began to completely redesign the American kits, only using the same materials but changing the packaging and instructions.
