Description Notes

‘Things of Science’ educational kit (Simple Machines, no. 1), by Advisory Centre for Education, English, c. 1960s.

Things of Science kit, no. 1, ‘Simple Machines’.

6616.14 - onwards are in the new packaging. Most of these are undated.

Contains instruction booklet, four pulleys of two sizes, pulley, square sticks, dowel, twine, wire, four pins, four screw eyes, and a lead weight. All stored in plastic tray. The instruction booklet is 8 pages long (in one large fold out document). Explains what a machine is and then details a list of 15 experiments one can try with the contents of the box. This box seems to have 2 extra pieces of card with a circular design around a small black dot.

Text and objects inside seems to be the same as 6616.7. Unclear if all subsequent boxes are re-makes of pre-existing American Things of Science kits.

In good condition, slight signs of wear. Complete.

Description
These Things of Science kits, created by Advisory Centre for Education in the 1960s, would have been sent out to young audiences in the U.K. and enabled the user to practice science experiments relating to the contents of the box. Subjects were broad and covered topics such as simple machines, osmosis and shells as well as road safety. The kits were inspired by their U.S. counterparts, created by Science Service from the 1940s onwards. Originally, Advisory Centre for Education purchased the U.S. kits and relabelled them, but although these kits contain the same materials as the U.S. kits, they are completely repackaged.
