Description Notes

4 1/2-inch globe of the Planet Mars, produced by Camille Flammarion after his own map, made by E. Berteaux, French, 1884.

Plaster sphere with 12 lithographed gores and 2 polar calottes. Latitude marked along meridian every 10 degrees; longitude marked along equator every 15 degrees. Sepia coloured cartography, regions and places marked in French. Sphere mounted on a turned ebonized wood stand with brass fittings.

Earliest globe published by Flammarion, and the first to be issued after Schiaparelli first recorded the Martian ‘canals’; map is based on Flammarion’s own, and adapted from Richard Proctor’s.

Condition: good, complete.
