Description Notes

Microscope slide preparation set, in case with royal cypher of Queen Charlotte, c. 1774.

Five instruments in a double clasp, hinging red leather case lined with silk and velvet. The instruments are metal with wooden handles, likely ebony. There are three scalpels of differing shapes and sizes, one pair of forceps and one double-ended instrument, with a probe at one end and a small blunt blade at the other. Under the lid, the silk with wool stuffing underneath has worn through, revealing a date on a hard piece of card: November 1774. This silk-covered card flips down to reveal a small scissor-shaped impression (scissors no longer extant).

The top of the case has a small metal inlay engraved with the royal cypher of Queen Charlotte (CR).
