Description Notes

Chemistry set, Gilbert Chemistry Outfit, by A.C. Gilbert Co., U.S.A., c. 1936

Chemistry set in blue wooden cabinet-style box, by A.C. Gilbert company.

Comes with 31 wooden tubs with lids and paper labels in either blue or red. The glue on most of the labels has failed; the labels have frequently been reaffixed with sellotape, the glue on which has also mostly failed. Hence, labels for each tub are frequently loose. The tubs are stored on the three top shelves of the outfit, which also have three cardboard boxes (one on each shelf) - assumedly designed to keep the tubs tight on the shelf and to prevent them from falling out.
Three red tin test tube holders, one empty.
Five glass test tubes sealed with cork stoppers housed in one of the test tube holders.
Five used glass test tubes housed in one of the test tube holders.
One black sponge (?); two wire brushes; one broken piece of red wood - possibly a holder for an individual test tube?
One yellowed broken piece of glass attached to a cork stopper.
Six empty glass bottles (four are stoppered with corks), one glass bottle (stoppered with cork) containing a liquid.
Seven red and white envelopes containing paper with chemicals.
Metal handle?
Glass rod
Two black metal spoons, rusted
Two empty wooden tubs
A section of wire in white rubber tubing.
A section of rubberised tubing, discoloured/dirty.
One postcard inviting the owner to send off for a free copy of Chemcraft Chemist Magazine, by the Porter Chemical Company.
Seven red and white envelopes containing wire, papers, strips.

Comes with four pamphlets (unclear which, or if all, are original):
One pamphlet, titled 'Gilbert Chemistry Outfit', is dated 1936. Compiled by the Bethwood Research Laboratory and edited by Treat B. Johnson, Elbert M. Shelton and Alfred C. Gilbert.
Chemistry for Boys book, also dated 1936. Seems as if cover has been removed. Compiled by the Bethwood Research Laboratory and edited by Treat B. Johnson, Elbert M. Shelton and Alfred C. Gilbert.
Gilbert Glass Blowing booklet, 1909. By Carlton J. Lynde.
Gilbert Chemistry booklet, dated 1937. Compiled by the Bethwood Research Laboratory and edited by Treat B. Johnson, Elbert M. Shelton and Alfred C. Gilbert.
