Description
A quadrant is a quarter of a circle. A horary quadrant is used to find the time of day by measuring the Sun's altitude. The device is usually made of wood or metal (brass), but some other cheaper options include paper on wood, or simply paper. In order to have the measurements printed on paper, one needs a printing plate, hence this collection.
This printing plate was made by the famous Flemish engraver Richard Collin (1627-1698). Born in Luxembourg, Collin worked in Rome where he was trained by Jocob von Sandrart (1630-1708), and in Antwerp where he became master in the Guild of St. Luke. Famous as a portrait engraver, he later moved to Brussels and became the court engraver for King Charles II of Spain.
