Description Notes
Folio trade catalogue, by Francesco Baillou, Milan, Italian, c. 1740.
A catalogue folded. The first page is printed on one side only, of an illustration of an engraving by Gaetano Le Poer active in Milan between the 1740s and the 1750s, showing clearly the products - compound microscopes, telescopes, spyglasses, etc. - that Baillou offered. The catalogue is printed on the third and fourth page in two columns on both sides, of the same content in two different languages - Italian on the left, and French on the right. The text describes the different optical instruments, such as lorgnettes, binoculars, and microscopes.

Description
Francesco Baillou (or François de Baillou, 1700-1774) was a French scientific optical instrument maker. Born in France, he immigrated with his family to Milan, Italy when he was still young. In Italy, he grew up to become a prominent optical instrument maker, and was granted "Regio Cesareo Ottico" (Royal Optician) status by the Empress Maria Teresa of Austria in 1750.
Not many of Baillou's products have survived. In this catalogue, one can read the different types of products he offered, and with the illustration one can verify the provenance by the design and the look.
