Description
These two large cabinets of stereoscopic slides were the collections of John Heaver Fremlin (1913-1995). Donated to the Herbarium of the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge in 1991, the Whipple Museum received them along with Wh. 6774 (four cabinets of botanical glass slides) in 2011.
As well as being a nuclear physicist, John Fremlin was a naturalist who had a keen interest in stereoscopic photography. He created these stereoscopic slides and gave them to Peter Derek Sell, the then Assistant Curator of the Herbarium.
Stereoscopic photography overlays two identical images, with one slightly out of focus, to create an illusion of depth.
