Description Notes

Universal equinoctial sundial, fake.

Brass dial with inset compass and two hinged elements. The main body of object is an octagonal brass plate, which would have originally rested on three feet, but one of these was missing at the time of accessioning. A compass is set into this, with a glass cover. The backing for the compass is also brass, and features a star with compass points, the cardinal directions labelled with their respective initials (N,E,S,W). Two hinged elements are also attached to the base plate, an equinoctial ring and a latitude arm, both in brass. The equinoctial ring has 2x 1-12 scale in Roman numerals, and the latitude arm features a 90˚ scale, labelled at every 10˚ and subdivided at every 1˚. The surrounding base plate is decorated with floral engravings. The bottom of the object is largely plain, with visible pins, screws and nuts which attach the various elements to the base plate.
