Description Notes

Approximately 18,000 index cards.

These records would have originally been part of a much larger series of index cards created for customer orders and instrument data. The record in this collection survived because one company employee took them with him when he moved departments, as they related to the work of the department - gas analysis. These cards continued to be used to record repairs information. Several small bundles of cards survive at the Cambridge University Library, but the location of the other instrument cards is unclear and it is unlikely they survived.

The general card filing system has sections for type of instrument, then each card is arranged in serial number order.

Data recorded on each card includes instrument name, instrument serial number, catalogue number, name of client, date sent to packing department, order number, details of particular fittings and calibrations, name of person checked by. Some cards include details of repairs, listing date of repair and replacement parts. Some have calibration graphs attached. Some have business copy invoices attached.

Serial number coverage is not inclusive: instruments were allocated serial numbers as they were requested for production. See Instrument Production Logbooks for details of instruments in serial number order.

Instruments include: control panels, meters, indicators, control units, electrometers, pyrometers, temperature indicators, Extensometer, Small Animal Temperature Measuring Outfit, Fery Telescope, Voltomoscope, meter blocks
