12-inch beam compass, by Jesse Ramsden, c. 1760 - c. 1800
Brass beam divided -0.5 - 48.5 by 1 to 0.1 with vernier reading to 0.01 and -0.5 to 36.5 by 1 subdivided to 0.1 with vernier reading to 0.01. scale of 4 and 3 chains to the inch, vernier reading to one link. Brass adjustable zero index with fitting for protracting pin; sliding index with fitting for protracting pin; sliding index with clamp, slow motion screw, vernier, and fitting for protracting pin, pen, or pencil. 2 steel protracting pins with knurled brass heads and clamps. Brass pencil holder and pen (not original? [Dr. McConnell thinks it IS original...]). Fitted mahogany box with sliding lid.
