Description Notes

Rule and protractor by Domenico [Dominicus] Lusuerg, Italian, 1701.

Two hinged limbs with a protractor at the limbs. Protractor divided [0] - 180 in both directions, numbered by 10 subdivided to 1 and marked ‘Anguli Interiores’ and ‘Angulie Exteriores’. Obverse of limbs carry linear scale marked ‘Semipes Geometricus’ divided [0] - 60 numbered by 10, 0 - 10 subdivided to 0.5 and scale marked ‘Semipes Romanus’ divided as before. Reverse carries a scale marked ‘Semipalmus Romanus’ divided as before, also a scale of inches with transversal for division to 1/100 inch. Hinge carries scale marked ‘Pro Eleutione Bombardæ’ divided 6 - [0] - 6 numbered by 1 subdivided to 1/6. Upper side of hinge carries compass with screw-fit lid, cardinal points marked, steel needle in form of arrow. Acanthus leaf decoration.

Events

Description
The gunner’s scale or gauge was employed as an aide mémoire for types of ordnance, weight of gunpowder and shot to use. Dominicus and his father Giacomo Lusuerg made mathematical instruments in Modena and Rome between 1674 and 1719.
