Description Notes

Boxwood slide rule with metal index and ivory slide. Obverse has scales on the stock: scale marked ‘S’, divided [14] - [130], numbered by 10, subdivided to 1; scale marked ‘E’, divided [16] - [160], numbered by 10, subdivided to 1; scale marked ‘L’, divided [34] - [350], numbered 40, 50...200, 220, 240...340, 34 - 200 subdivided to 1, 200 - 350 subdivided to 2; scale marked ‘I’, divided [20] - [200], numbered by 10, subdivided to 1. Brass index marked ‘Weight of carcase’ above, slides over these four scales. Slide has scale of ‘Girth in Feet’, divided [4.5] - [10.5], numbered by 1, subdivided to 1 inch; gauge points marked ‘A’ - ‘I’. Scale at bottom of stock of ‘length in feet’, divided [3.5] - 7, numbered by 1, subdivided to 1 inch.
Reverse has table of gauge points and guides for measuring foreign cattle. Also gives definitions of lines of weights on reverse (S = scores of lbs, E = Edinburgh stone (17 1/2 lbs), L = London stone (8lbs), I = Imperial stone (14lbs)).
