Description Notes

Gilt-brass sun and moon horizontal dial, [southern Europe], 1580.

Gilt-brass octagonal base plate with handle carrying compass box. Scale of lunar age divided 1 - 29, numbered by 1, surmounted by volvelle disc with aspectarium and dial divided 4 - 12, 1 - 8, numbered by 1. Dated on the volvelle ‘1580’. Pierced and hinged gnomon for 46˚ N, with leaf tracery engraved decoration. Similar decoration on the volvelle and base plate. Compass box with silvered bowl; meridian line offset c.10˚ E of N for magnetic variation.
Reverse plain.
