Description
This model was made and sold by ‘Les Fils d’Émile Deyrolle’, the sons of the French naturalist and dealer Emile Deyrolle. Deyrolle’s firm specialized in scientific teaching models and specimens, and it continues to trade in this area to the present day.

Unlike the papier-mache animals models produced by Louis Thomas Jérôme Auzoux (1797–1880), those made by Les Fils d’Émile Deyrolle included a wider variety of the six Cuvierian specimen types (bird, reptile, fish, insect, mollusk and annelid). By producing several animals of the same type, it enabled students to compare similarities and differences within a single biological family, and showed different stages of dissection in one view. This earthworm model is presented on a wooden table and shows several functional units at once. As teaching aids, the Deyrolle models required a demonstrator to explain the anatomy of the model. Now located on the left bank in Paris, the Deyrolle shop was originally opened at 23, Rue de la Monnaie by Jean-Baptiste Deyrolle in 1831. In 1866, Émile took over his grand-father’s business, eventually handing it over to his sons.
