Description Notes
16 medals illustrating various subjects and a magnifying lens, in box, by Thomason, 2/2 C19th.
Box in the form of a book with lid now detached lined with red velvet and red silk contains 3 fitted layers for the medals. Each medal is a white metal disc with relief information about a particular science or scientific machine (mostly words but some pictures). Top tray carries medals for: mineralogy, astronomy, hydrostatics, metallurgy, high-pressure engine, and phrenology. Second tray carries medals for: chrystallography, electricity, geology, classification of minerals, mechanics, and Newcomen’s steam engine. Bottom tray carries medals for: ‘Mr. Watt’s double acting steam engine’, ‘Mr. Watt’s single acting steam engine’, chemistry, and optics. Also an octagonal magnifying lens. Silk tags to lift medals out of their fittings.
