Description Notes
Wooden dial with hand-coloured engraved paper scales and brass gnomons. Cube set on a turned wooden pillar with hinge to allow adjustment for latitude. Rectangular base with 4 feet; neo-classical floral swags and other decoration. In base an inset compass with 8 points marked; scale for magnetic variation divided 0 - 40˚, numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 2˚, with line marked at 10˚ W.
Horizontal dial divided IIII - XII, I - VIII, numbered by I, subdivided to 15 minutes.
North dial divided IIII - VIII, IIII - VIII, numbered by I, subdivided to 15 minutes; marked ‘NORD’. South dial divided VI - XII, I - VI, numbered by I, subdivided to 15 minutes; marked ‘SUD’. West dial divided I - VIII, numbered by I, subdivided to 15 minutes. East dial divided IIII - XI, numbered by I, subdivided to 15 minutes; also marked with latitude scale divided 80˚ - 20˚, numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 1˚; similar scale from 10 - 75˚ on swag decoration; attachment point for lead plumb bob.
