Description Notes

Crescent dial by Johann Martin, German, c. 1700.

Square gilt-brass base on 3 feet, 2 with levelling screws. Base marked with cardinal points in Latin and list of towns and latitudes. Decorated silver gallows with gilt-brass plumb-bob. Pierced and decorated hour plate with 2 half-circles divided on silver rim 2 - 12 and 12, 1 - 10, both numbered by 1 and subdivided to 30 minutes. Silver date scale divided to named (initialled) month, subdivided to 10 days, with steel sickle-form gnomons. Central silver latitude arc divided [14˚] - 90˚ ([10˚] - 90˚; 17-1-2000), numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 2˚. (Latitude arc hinged to base; fits into slot in hour plate; 17-1-2000). Underside of base carries double calendrical volvelle marked ‘Algemeiner und Immer Wehrender Callender’ and ‘Monat des Jahrs’.
