Description Notes
Rectangular gilt brass plate on four feet. Base plate engraved with a scene titled ‘Lapsus equaero perit translatodum sidem alta fuge’ which includes a flying horse and falling man in the sky, with two standing and one seated man in the foreground of a rural scene. Inset compass with cardinal points marked in Latin; magnetic variation marked at 10˚E of N. The whole compass can be turned over a degree scale divided [90˚] - 0 - 90˚, numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 1˚. Compass is removable. Hour ring divided 1 - 12, 1 - 12, numbered by 1; supported on 2 pillars. A plumb bob hangs from the central latitude scale which is divided [0] - 90˚, numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 1˚.
