Description Notes
Gilt and silvered brass dial. Octagonal gilt-brass base plate set on 3 feet and marked with the latitudes of ‘Wien’ and ‘Paris’ as 48. Inset compass with cardinal points marked and magnetic variation shown at 10˚ W of N. Plumb bob in pierced and decorated gilt-brass gallows. Gilt-brass latitude arc divided 20˚ - 90˚ ([12˚]-90˚, subdivided to 2˚; 28-1-2000), numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 1˚. Hinged hour ring divided on a silver strip set on the inner rim, 3 - 12, 1 - 9, numbered by 1, subdivided to 30 minutes. (Folding pin gnomon on diametrical bar; 28-1-2000). On reverse of compass box a silvered list of towns and latitudes (see history file).
Octagonal case covered in black leather, lined with faded red silk. In lid a silvered brass disc with a list of towns and latitudes (see history file).
Condition: good (case worn).
