Description Notes

Decorated gilt-brass octagonal base. Inset compass with silvered base; 8-point rose; cardinal points marked in Latin; marked for magnetic variation at about 15˚ W of N. silvered hour ring (silvering worn; 28-1-2000) divided III - XII, I - IX, numbered by I, subdivided to 30 minutes; also subdivided to 30 minutes on inner rim. Silvered latitude arc divided 0 - 84˚ (divided [10] - 84˚; 28-1-2000), numbered by 10˚, subdivided to 2˚ [errors in calibration (30 marked as 40; 28-1-2000)]. (Folding gnomon on diametrical bar; 28-1-2000). Reverse of compass box marked ‘Eleu Pol’ with five towns listed with their latitudes: Augsburg and Paris 48, Cracau and Prague 50, Leipzig 51. Hinge of hour ring and rim of ring marked ‘VV’.
(Also base marked ‘VV’; 28-1-2000).

Condition: good (silvering worn).
