Description Notes
clog almanac, English, 17th . Four-sided wooden bar, edges of bar notched to show the days, each 7th notch being larger than the rest to facilitate reckoning in weeks. First day of each month shown by a small hole in the centre of the notch (may formerly have held a brass pin). The holes on the end indicate which quarter of the year that side shows.
Each face of the bar bears carved symbols, above the appropriate notches, to denote the feast-days during a quarter of the year. There are also devices to indicate the Golden Numbers (one of which denotes the days of full moon throughout any particular year); they are shown in a condensed form of Roman numeral.
