Description Notes
Oval watercolour 76 x 60 mm, surrounded by a brass rim holding glass in place and set in a recess in a black painted wood frame. Paper glued over back of frame, and paper label stuck on back. Brass hanging loop on top of frame.
Condition fair (paint wearing off frame); complete.

In this painting the French writer and educator, Madame de Genlis, sits with a terrestrial globe behind her left shoulder. Globes have often appeared in portrait paintings beside subjects, their ownership signifying intelligence and worldliness.
