Provenance

Purchased by Robert Stewart Whipple from A.S. Jones. The instrument found its way to Sotheby's, where it was purchased by A.S. Jones on 17/03/1938. Later acquired by Henri Michel, Brussels, Belgium. Originally in a collection of geodetic instruments made for Emperor Rudolph II (1552 - 1612).

Description Notes

Gilt-brass semi-circle graduated [0] - 180 numbered by 10 subdivided to 1. Sector pivots from centre of circle, scale on each arm divided 0 - 1500 numbered by 25 divided to 5 (right hand arm has every hundreth division written back to front). Grooves cut along both edges of each arm, Sliding cursor for sight vane (missing) on left hand arm only). Clamps for each arm below semicircle. Ball and socket joint with shaft for attachment to tripod.

Condition good; incomplete (sight vanes and one cursor missing)
