Description Notes
Set of seven instruments with various alternative points; brass and steel in brass bound black shagreen case. Comprising:
1. Parallel ruler; brass; double sliding bar rule; steel screws (replacements). Pierced engraved rules divided (over both) 180 - [0] and [0] - 180, numbered by 10, graduated to 1.
2. Brass sector; six inch; engraved on obverse with lines of sines, tangents (0 - 45 and 0 - 75) and log sines, tangents and numbers. Engraved on reverse with hours 0 - VI; chords 0 - 90; line of equal parts 0 - 10; line of chords 0 - 60, line of secants 0 - 75, line of latitude 0 - 90 and line of ‘In: M’ 0 - 90. Engraved along edge 0 - 12 inches.
3. Gunners calipers; brass with steel tips. Obverse divided along edge 0 - 12 inches; hinge divided 0 - 180 ‘Degrees’ and 1 - 10 ‘Inches’. Limb A: Table for ‘The Weight of a Cube Foot in’ sixteen materials. Limb B: pair of scales to measure internal bore - ‘Inches’ 2 - 10, numbered by 1, graduated to 0.25. Corresponding scale of ‘Guns’, divided FN, F, 3, M, S, 6, 8, DC, 12, WC, 24, DC, BC, WC. Reverse divided with line of Chords and line of equal parts; table of ‘Names’, ‘Proof’ and ‘Serwice’ of guns. Hinge with scale of ‘shot’ 1 - 63 with pointing index finger on limb. Diagrams of solid bodies with (?) volumes.
4. Ruler and scale; brass; divided ‘I M’ 0 - 6 inches; ‘F M’ 0 - 50 and with transversal scale subdivided for half and quarter inch to hundredths. Reverse has line of chords 0 - 90 and scale of equal parts for 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 parts to the inch.
5. Dividers; brass with steel tips and steel long joint hinge; engraved with floral motifs.
6. Pair of ink bows; brass octagonal handle and steel point.
7. compass point with socket for various attachments; steel point with steel long joint hinge engraved with floral motifs.
Attachments: steel point; brass socket for pencil or ink bows with steel hinge; ink bows with steel hinge; brass dotting pen with steel hinge. All with brass wing-nut adjustment and attachment to compass point.
All main instruments decorated with wheatsheaf and acanthus motifs.
Condition good; incomplete (one item missing).
