Description Notes

Brass; open triangle beam; agate centre knife-edge and split end-knives; steel index moves over ivory scale. Brass flag over beam for adjustment. Beam graduated for riders. Steel J wires with agate planes marked ‘L’ and ‘R’. Steel stirrup hangers with platinised metal pans. Supported on double circular pillars mounted on square base; two bubble levels with mutually perpendicular axes; knurled brass screw holds plate to base. Knurled headed brass screw operates arresting mechanism and raises two ivory and (?) agate headed knobs to arrest pans. Horizontal member supports beam. Pivoting arm with mirror strip reflects the beam scale.
Double rider slide operated by brass knurled screws outside case; plate glass base; fitted mahogany case with two half drawers with ivory handles. 3 brass levelling feet. Glazed all round with sliding front panel. Drawers contain phials, tweezers, spare index &c.
Oertling model 12SBA, early version with 12SB sloping beam; also beam mirror. In most respects as 1909 cat. The earliest definite 12SBA.
