The instrument is introduced as allowing stretching to be watched continuously while in process, during which no part of it needs to be touched. It is suitable for horizontal or inclined bars as well as vertical ones.
A detailed description is given, with diagrams, explaining how to use it. A description and diagram of a modified form of Ewing Extensometer, adapted to measure the elastic compression of short blocks, follows. A Marking-off Apparatus is shown, for marking off on the specimen the length to which the Extensometer is applied when in use.
