Instruction Sheet: Making models of chemical structures using Griffin ‘Grifzote’ spheres
Description
Description of polystyrene spheres used to make models of chemical structures.
- General description of the spheres.
- Description of 2 types of model: tangential contact models for modelling atoms and molecules of elements and compounds (both organic and inorganic), and space-filling models to indicate how electron clouds overlap in space.
- Practical details of model construction.
- Photographs of the models depicting various molecules.
- Geometric diagram of the tangential contact and space-filling molecules as illustrated by the water molecule H20.
- Geometric diagrams of marking spheres at the most common angles and of marking out tetrahedrally with protractor.
- Paper patten details for space filling model of the formaldehyde molecule CH20, and for a benzene ring.
- Tables of covalent, ionic and Van der Waal’s radii; of some common structures; and of the Institute of Physics colour code for the models
- References and useful reference books
- Addenda: techniques for connecting the spheres together and for marking out speheres using dividers instead of a protractor.

Heating stages for microscopes
Description
- Description of two heating stages that have been developed as an accessory to the standard microscope: one model for temperatures of 30-60 degrees Celsius and another, simpler model for temperatures of 35-43 degrees Celsius. The heating stages are equipped with thermometers - on the 30-60 degree model this is attached to a thermoregulator, and on the 35-43 degree model the temperature is regulated by hand by means of the built-in regulating resistance of the heating device.
- Photograph of the heating stage attached to a microscope.
- Order list for the heating stages and accessories for both stages, with catalogue numbers and approximate weight. No prices.
- Details of how to contact Zeiss branches, and advertisement for other instruments in their delivery programme.
