Instruction Sheet: Making models of chemical structures using Griffin ‘Grifzote’ spheres
Description
Description of polystyrene spheres used to make models of chemical structures.
- General description of the spheres.
- Description of 2 types of model: tangential contact models for modelling atoms and molecules of elements and compounds (both organic and inorganic), and space-filling models to indicate how electron clouds overlap in space.
- Practical details of model construction.
- Photographs of the models depicting various molecules.
- Geometric diagram of the tangential contact and space-filling molecules as illustrated by the water molecule H20.
- Geometric diagrams of marking spheres at the most common angles and of marking out tetrahedrally with protractor.
- Paper patten details for space filling model of the formaldehyde molecule CH20, and for a benzene ring.
- Tables of covalent, ionic and Van der Waal’s radii; of some common structures; and of the Institute of Physics colour code for the models
